Guantánamo and back: an interview with Moazzam Begg

Former Guantánamo Bay detainee Moazzam Begg is devastatingly reasonable. He is calm, well-spoken, highly articulate, and small; when imprisoned by the US army in Afghanistan, he says, his hands were small enough to slip out of their cuffs when the guards were absent.

Begg was imprisoned for three years without charge or trial. A British citizen, he was picked up by US intelligence officials in Pakistan in January 2002; they accused him of being a member of al-Qaida, which he denies.

At first, Begg was taken to the Bagram detention centre in Afghanistan, where, he says, he went a year without seeing sunlight. From January 2003, he was moved to Guantánamo Bay. Most of his time there was spent in solitary confinement.

The British government brought him back to the UK in January 2005, along with three other British detainees. They were all taken in for questioning at Paddington Green police station – and released within 24 hours. No charges have ever been brought against them.

Decoração, "pecebe"?

Cara Formiga, estive a olhar para o seu formigueiro e achei que precisava de um decor diferente. Desenhei-lhe papel de parede, para para dar um bocadinho de cor, "tá a ver"!

Para uma sala de estar, para receber a rainha Vitória de Inglaterra, sei lá! É um clássico, um "must have". (que deveria estar com o fundo branco. Mas isto deve ser por ter exportado do Freehand como um Gif.)

Um modelo pacífico, com uma combinação de cores muito apropriada para um escritório, uma biblioteca, um quarto de estudo - caso tenha algum dos três.

Por fim, esta proposta já mais próxima da estação, muito trendy no que diz respeito à cor que que facilmente pode decorar a parede do quarto dos miúdos.

Making Faces The Portrait is dead. Long live the Face!

What ‘the body’ was to photography in last decade of the twentieth century, ‘the face’ is to the first decade of the new millennium—a central motif, and highly contested terrain.

But ‘the face’ encompasses terrain far broader than is suggested by the term ‘portrait’. Indeed, a substantial number of contemporary imagemakers reject the conventional genre of portraiture, considering it to be fraught with tired conventions and discredited assumptions—concerning both the nature of the face itself, and the manner of its representation. As the body displaced the nude as a core focus of photographers, so the face is displacing the portrait.

Traditionally in photography, as in popular culture, the face has been considered the primary site and marker of individual identity. The photographer Paul Graham recently summed up this deeply-rooted belief when he defined portraiture as ‘one of the most profound things that one can do… to simply and truly see someone, and express their sentience. To reflect the inner self through external appearance.’
