Continuum appropriates downloaded porn clips and reconfigures them into an ambient evolving sequence. The specific editing techniques hold the porn stars? voices and expressions in stasis, effectively reciprocating the violent intensity of the original material. Conversely, the sequence emanates a kind of beauty; the jittery evolution of the faces resemble dancing watercolours, while the ambient audio texture (all original sound), is meditative and wondering. The result produces a contradiction that the work seems determined not to resolve: The viewer is paradoxically positioned as the rapist witness to the model?s mercy, yet our participation is unnervingly impotent. Tom Badley currently studies at the Slade School of Fine Art, London. He has exhibited around London and has had numerous shows in the North of England. Although video is an important medium in his work, Tom Badley's output comprises of numerous painting and drawing projects that span often-opposing styles and traditions. Ongoing projects include the audio recording and cataloguing of his activities (a project that was initiated in 2002 and has been continuing every day), and the gradual assembling of an army of doppelgangers and look-a-likes, for eventual deployment in Tom Badley's actual personal life. As well as involving himself in the writing and production of music and music videos, Tom Badley also regularly distributes his ongoing graphic journal Advert, which can sometimes be found in waiting rooms, receptions and parks around London.
