NEM DE PROPÓSITO
Electric Avenue in London

Ken Livingstone wants to smarten up Oxford Street. Once the Romans’ main road to the west, and still a privileged spot on the British Monopoly game-board, this West End axis has long been rather tatty. In a September meeting with the London Assembly, the mayor talked about his plans to revitalise the road and make it more personable, which include new electric trams along its 1½-mile length, from Marble Arch to Tottenham Court Road. Buses and taxis would be banned (cars already are), and the trams could be running by 2012. The New West End Company, which represents many shops in the street, is believed to back the proposal.
