Christie's move stuns dealers

On Thursday evening there will be an opening at the Haunch of Venison gallery off Bond Street for a young artist called Ian Monroe.

But the main topic of conversation will be last week's announcement that Haunch of Venison had been bought by Christie's - an announcement to which the art world has reacted with shock and disbelief.

Why would Haunch of Venison, a young and expanding gallery representing hugely successful artists such as Bill Viola and Keith Tyson, and with branches in Zurich and Berlin, be selling? And why, more crucially, has it sold to Christie's?
